AC vs DC current

Electricity means that there are two types of electricity or we can also say that current is of two types, one of which is AC current and the other is DC current. You have to be told about AC and DC current in detail in this article so that you can get to know well. But you should also know that you must know or know about both AC and DC current because anything can happen in our life, due to which loss can also happen. That is why one should be aware of the difference between AC and DC current.

Difference between AC and DC Current :

We will tell you about AC and DC current in a short way so that you can know quickly. That is why below we have told about the difference between AC and DC current one by one in the table which is as follows :

AC vs DC Current Difference :

The points which we have mentioned above, we are going to tell the same points one by one in detail inside the table so that you can get to know well. All the information about the difference between AC and DC current is as follows :

  • What is AC and DC Current :

First of all, you will be told a little bit about these two currents, why it is named differently. AC current is the current that changes its direction repeatedly. Because of changing the direction of flow repeatedly, this current is called alternating current ie AC current. That is, the ac current never flows in the same direction, meaning it repeats the direction of flowing repeatedly 50 to 60 times within a second.

DC current is called direct current and this current always flows in the same direction, either forward or backward, but if it has to flow, then in the same direction. That is why it is called direct current ie DC current.

  • How AC and DC Current works :

In the picture you can see in which direction the ac current is flowing first and in the second picture it stops and in the third picture it starts flowing in the opposite direction. This happens again and again, due to which when the bulb is connected, the bulb first wakes up, then turns off and starts waking up again. The motor first rotates in the straight direction, then stops, then it starts rotating in the opposite direction because the ac current has changed the direction of flow, due to which the direction of rotation of motor is also changing again & again.

Whereas the equipment running on dc current will run continuously because dc current does not flow in the same direction but always increases in the same direction so that the equipment does not stop intermittently but keeps running continuously and the motor also moves in the same direction with the same speed. Because the current is flowing in only one direction.

In this you must have come to know that AC current works in both directions whereas DC current works in only one direction.

  • AC current and DC current direction flow :

DC current always flows in the same direction whereas AC current keeps changing its direction repeatedly, sometimes forward and sometimes backward. That is, the direction of flow of ac current is not fixed and it keeps changing its direction 50 to 60 times in a second.

AC vs DC current working cycle
AC vs DC current working cycle

If you see in the picture, you will understand well as the line of dc current is straight, it means that the dc current is always going forward in the same direction, whereas if you see the ac current, then first its half cycle is positive and down cycle. Negative cycle is happening. But as the ac current changes its direction, its cycle also reverses due to which its positive and negative terminal also changed. After this, the positive and negative terminals of the ac current have changed again. Whereas the cycle of dc current does not change due to which it is moving forward in the same direction. You must remember so much that when ac current changes its direction then its voltage level is definitely 0 because to change direction one has to stop and only after stopping the voltage is 0 at that time.

  • AC vs DC current which can be stored :

Out of AC current and DC current, only DC current can be stored in the battery. Because the same current is stored inside the battery which is removed from the current flowing in the same direction. Because if the current flowing in the same direction is connected to the battery, then the electrons lying on the anode plate of the battery, after flowing towards the cathode, start getting deposited in the same plate i.e. in the cathode plate, due to which the battery starts charging. If you do not understand, then you should know that positive electricity is given from the positive terminal of the battery and negative power is given from the negative terminal, then only then the battery will be charged and we can do this with dc current but it is not possible with ac current. Because the positive and negative terminal of the ac current keeps changing frequently, so that first the battery will be charged and then it will be discharged because earlier the a terminal of the ac current was the positive terminal and the b terminal was the negative terminal, due to which the battery started charging. But as soon as the ac current changed its direction, the a terminal became the negative terminal and the b terminal became the positive terminal. Due to which the battery will not be able to charge i.e. first the current will accumulate and then it will end due to the change of terminal.

Important notice :

Power is given only by looking at the positive and negative terminals of the battery. If you give positive current from cathode terminal of battery and negative current from anode terminal then smoke will come out from battery which can cause battery to fire and this is also due to ac current. That is, do not charge the battery with the help of ac current because the positive and negative terminals of the ac current change frequently, due to which the wrong connection can lead to smoke and then fire from the battery. Charge the battery only with DC current as its positive and negative terminals are always fixed.

  • AC vs DC current which is used for supply :

For power supply, only ac current is used because after increasing the voltage of ac current, we can send ac current to millions of kilometers away because its voltage does not decrease quickly. Whereas if dc current is used to supply electricity, then only dc current can be supplied within 2 kilometers. By sending dc current far and wide, the voltage becomes very low, due to which the equipment cannot run because they do not get the full voltage, so only ac current is used to supply power to a long distance so that the equipment can be Full voltage can be delivered to the houses for running.

  • AC vs DC current loss :

Most of the current is wasted, so only the dc current goes. Because to send dc current far and wide, the voltage has to be increased to a great extent so that the loss of current is minimum, but the voltage of dc current can be increased only in a limited amount i.e. the voltage cannot be increased to a large extent. Due to which the electricity starts going to waste due to dc current going far and wide as we keep increasing the distance.

Whereas we can increase the voltage of the ac current as much as we want, so that a very small amount of ac current is wasted even if ac power is transmitted far and wide. In order for the current to be in small amounts, the voltage has to be increased and the step-up transformer is responsible for increasing the voltage.

  • AC vs DC current which is better :

By the way, without both the current, the equipment will not be able to run because some devices run only on ac current while there are some devices which run only on dc current. For example, to charge the battery, to run a smartphone, to run a television, to run a laptop, only dc current is needed. Whereas the fans in our homes which run on ac current only, but if we want, we can also buy dc fans which run only on dc current. We cannot do that the devices which run on dc current start working with the help of ac current. But we can do that after customizing the equipment that runs on ac current, the same equipment starts running on dc current. Without dc current, we cannot run a device like a smartphone. Whereas we cannot use dc current to deliver electricity far and wide and only ac current is required.

  • AC vs DC Current dangerous:

Both AC and DC current are dangerous if its voltage is high. But if looked closely, the AC current is considered to be a little more dangerous, that is, the risk of getting a shock of the current is seen a little more in the AC current and a little less in the DC current.

  • AC vs DC current whose voltage is higher :

In this, the voltage of AC current is high because we can increase the AC voltage as much as we want with the help of transformer. But we cannot increase the DC current as much as we want, that is, the voltage of DC current can be increased in a limited amount. For example, up to 1100 KV, the voltage can be increased to a maximum of dc current. But the maximum dc current used in the circuit is about 282 volts.
